SIMON HAMUI ON
ACALA’S INTERIORS

Simon Hamui - Designer
The aim of our design work is the pleasure of seeing the Owner’s desires taking shape and recognizing himself in it.

“Given the long and trusting relationship of many previous projects with these particular clients, the approach for this project was rather straight forward in terms of use and practicality. Having built several other boats in the past, the client’s vast experience of comprehending and knowing first hand how boats operate for them was a key and crucial factor to the logical and pragmatic approach to establishing the overall layout and space distribution” Simon Hamui says.

“The thought process for independent circulation for guests and crew established a flow around that concept. Furthermore, understanding how the families and guests live as a group when traveling, determined the specific function and capacities of each room and outdoor area. For the aesthetic approach, we decided to use a very neutral and natural pallete composed of wire brushed oil finished wood paneling, together with a textured non slip smoked ash wood flooring provides a softness on the material graphics. Flooring incorporates a fine textured oil finished smoked ash, enhancing the sensation of barefoot walking inside.”

“For the ceiling, we designed highly acoustic removable felt-like panels , coupled with longitudinal strips of the same wood as all paneling inside, to creare a room envelope , modulated to integrate all the channel lighting throughout as well as other installations. Indirect lighting and careful mirror placement serve to expand the room perception in several places.”

“Built in furniture followed a geometric marine inspired streamlined design, to evoque the modern exterior design of the boat, combining other natural oil finished woods, leathers and gun metal. The idea was to generate a very informal relaxed carefree environment, without sacrificing sophistication and well appointed details throughout.”

“The entire interior concept was highly customized. With the owners being avid art collectors, new pieces were selected for each space, playing an important part in the overall design. Furthermore, we designed custom frames for each piece that drew from the finishes in the furniture to closely tie the pieces to each space.”
