INTERVIEW TO
MARIO PEDOL & MASSIMO GINO
ON THE NAUTA AIR 110

by Mario Pedol & Massimo Gino - Nauta Design

CDM – The Owner of the new CDM Nauta Air 110, Mr Marcus Blackmore, has previously owned two sailing yachts designed by Nauta. What is your relationship and feeling with this Owner and why has he decided to build a Motor Yacht? And why a CDM?
MP&MG - We know Mr. and Mrs. Blackmore since many years ago as they previously owned two Southern Wind sailing yachts designed by Nauta. They have a very sophisticated and refined taste and are experienced sailors. The projects with them have always been an interesting and thorough journey in the search of beauty and smart, functional design.
They chose to go for a motor yacht construction to travel around the world in full comfort and safety, a target which you match more easily with an Explorer yacht. And they chose CDM Nauta Air because this line of small ships perfectly combines performance and range with comfort and elegance.
They looked for reliability, seaworthiness, elegance and style, and the CDM Nauta Air line is the perfect option for that.

CDM – What were the main inspirations behind the design of the Nauta Air 110, especially considering the owner's preference for sailing yachts? Are there specific elements from the previous sailboats that have been incorporated into this design?
MP&MG - Considering their sailing yacht background, the Owners have a very refined aesthetic sensitivity and they are very careful about style and design in general. As for our former sailing yacht projects for them, we are focusing very much on the balance of modern and classic aspects of the design.
On this yacht the already existing and well balanced CDM Nauta Air design stylemes are being reinterpreted in a more modern key.
That is a main chapter in our design calligraphy, as we always work on that, in every project we aim at creating a balance of modern and classic lines which confer our yachts with a timeless beauty.

CDM – Did Mr. Blackmore give you specific indication on both exterior and interior design?
MP&MG - They asked for having big and comfortable outdoor social areas, emphasis on outdoor spaces and on the connection with the surrounding natural environment.
While some of these characteristics are already fixed in the general design of every CDM Nauta Air (i.e. the big external aft staircase, big windows with important natural light flooding inside), the Owners have asked to integrate some design details that were in their former sailing yachts, i.e. an enlarged aft platform for profiting of a furtherly enhanced contact with the sea.
For the interiors they provided as references the already existing interiors of the CDM Nauta Air 110’ MIMI’ LA SARDINE, of the SW 108 GELLICEAUX (a sailing yacht, also designed by Nauta) and of their private houses. In general, they would like to have interiors featuring elegance and space. While space is granted by the generous volumes of the CDM Nauta Air 110 platform, elegance will be achieved through a cozy, welcoming and fresh “beach house” atmosphere, including natural materials and textures. It’s a brief that chimes with both their and our long-standing background in sailing yacht design, where direct and full contact with the surrounding natural element is a key factor.
A specific request concerns the transformability of several outdoor and indoor areas: spaces that can be converted from dining areas to relax areas and viceversa, thus providing different functions in the same spaces, depending on the momentary need: a characteristic that was already on their former sailing yachts and that will be furtherly implemented on the new CDM Nauta Air 110’.
